A good teacher is an inspired practitioner. Creativity cannot exist in isolation.
We are thrilled to invite you to join us for the private view of THAT SHOW 2016 featuring the work of 28 artist teachers from schools across the Tower Hamlets and the East End.
Private view: Thursday 4th February 2016 (6-8PM)
Celebrating the work of 28 teachers across the borough, THAT’s first collective exhibition showcases the range of artists and disciplines as well as the broad skillset of Art teachers working in the East End of London. Promoting Arts Education at a time when the Arts are under serious threat, this show aims to highlight the importance of creativity in education and the pivotal impact of art teachers investing time in feeding their own practice in order to be inspired practitioners who teach at the cutting edge.
Show times: Open daily from 3rd-6th February 2016 (10-6PM)
Four Corners, 121 Roman Road, Bethnal Green, London, E2 OQN
T: 020 8981 6111
In addition to Ceramics CPD we’ve had the pleasure of two workshops delivered by artists Mark Oliver and Mark Long aka Pencil+Help.
Mark and Mark planned and delivered an initial workshop based on stencil making and printing for a 2 colour screen print. Working from simple geometric shapes THAT teachers created 2 layer designs and re-capped pulling screens.
Their second workshop focused on photo emulsion transfer using a UV unit to set the screens in order to create a longer-lasting stencil. The boys showed us how to coat, expose and rinse the screens ready to print.
We then printed our stencil onto bespoke posters designed by Pencil and Help for our workshop:
Pencil and Help tailored their two workshops to the specific needs of our teachers and this made both parts really successful. We hope to work with them further in the future, this time with students. We would highly recommend this duo for work in schools, galleries and for other one off projects. For more information about them please check out their website here: http://www.pencilandhelp.co.uk/PORTFOLIO
THAT network has had a spectacular start to 2015 with the kick-off of numerous skills-based workshops delivered by professionals and aimed at ‘skilling up’ and improving the confidence of our teachers in more specialised disciplines such as Ceramics and Printmaking.
Nicola Tassie @ Standpoint Gallery -15th January 2015
One of our first workshops of the year gave us the opportunity to meet and be taught by the fantastic Nicola Tassie at her own workshop/studio above Standpoint Gallery, Shoreditch. We were able to witness the set up and running of a functioning ceramic workshop and were shown how to create our own slab pots.
THAT members will be returning to Tassie’s studio on the 5th March to explore and investigate the potential of slip and glazes. More photos of the workshops will be available soon under the ‘training’ section of our website.

THAT network are pleased to announce the venue and date of our next network meeting at Central Foundation Girls School (Art dept) on Tuesday the 4th November 2014.
Nearly a year after the network was launched, THAT network meetings have been hosted at venues across the borough and members have enjoyed workshops, talks and tours of Tower Hamlets art departments. Our special thanks to St Pauls Way for their fantastic CPD sessions on analogue photography and printmaking, and to Morpeth for the inspirational talk about the crossovers between two huge cultures – that of Art and of Education.
Mid-way through the autumn term CFGS has kindly offered to host the next meeting which will involve time for teachers to input their views and ideas on what they need from THAT next. Adrian Pitt from Greenwich Free School will be offering his own computerless photoshop lesson and members of CFGS team will offer a further workshop on 3D practice. We ask that where possible THAT members bring samples of their AS and A2 level work so we can moderate for ourselves and gain a better understanding of the new A level standards and marking criteria. If you have successful SOW or resources please bring and share either in person or via the dropbox account.
In addition to this teachers in the network will have the opportunity to sign up for further specialised CPD sessions run by local artists in disciplines such as painting, ceramics, printmaking and digital media. With the support of the Sinnott Fellowship network members will be able to access in depth training for free, which they can disseminate to colleagues and into their curriculum.
Finally we will be discussing opportunities for a showcase exhibition in the spring term.
We hope to see you there, please do RSVP to email@example.com if you are planning to attend so we can make refreshment provisions!
In the meantime check out the Tate website for the opportunity for more FREE workshops for schools and their students In Tower Hamlets and Southwark coming up in the autumn term. And follow us on twitter for more opportunities like these as they hit our inbox: @ThatnetworkLDN

Firstly a huge thank-you to everyone who came down to the last meeting of the academic year at Morpeth School. It was a great opportunity to reflect upon the current state of Art and Design education and see the way the school and faculty manage their exhibition space. The next THAT meeting won’t take place until after the summer holidays and we are still open to suggestions for our next host school. Do let us know if you are interested in hosting.
In the mean time, summer exhibition season is upon us so please keep an eye on the THAT calender for details of exhibitions and current opportunities for artists, teachers and local organisations: https://thatnetworklondon.wordpress.com/that-calender/
Hope to see you all at some of these

The final meeting for this academic year has now been confirmed for the 4th June 2014, 4-6PM at Morpeth. We are really looking forward to visiting the school and seeing some of their facilities including their in house gallery space!
